The next instalment of Messina Eats is a collab with our mates at Happyfield, the Haberfield legends who spend more on syrup than they do on coffee.
If you’ve somehow never made the trip: It’s a full-blown North American style diner in the middle of Sydney’s Little Italy, built by hand during lockdown and painted bright yellow. It’s been packed ever since.
If you did the covid maths that’s almost 6 years ago, so for their birthday this year we thought what better way to celebrate with a Messina Eats carpark party!

HOW DID MESSINA EATS START?
Messina Eats started in 2016, and the thinking behind it wasn’t complicated. Here at Messina, we’re foodies, we spend an unreasonable amount of our own time eating out, arguing about where to eat, and texting each other photos of things we’ve eaten. So we decided why not collaborate and bring our customers some of the brands we love to our HQ and have ourselves a carpark party.
So we cleared out the carpark, handed the kitchen to people whose food we’d been obsessing over for years, and hoped you’d show up. And show up you did, over and over and over again.
Ten years on, it’s one of our favourite things to host. We’re always hunting for the food brands, chefs and personalities we reckon would make a great night, and honestly, the ones we’d legitimately queue for ourselves. So when we worked out Happyfield’s 6th birthday was coming up, the decision made itself.
NEVER BEEN TO A MESSINA EATS EVENT?
Don’t worry, here’s what you’re in for.
We clear out the Messinaville carpark and hand the kitchen over to whoever we’ve talked into cooking at an outdoor carpark party... this time, Happyfield. They cook a few of their most famous savoury dishes and we handle the custom Messina Eats dessert.
Everything in between is music, cold drinks, string lights, and the smell of something good coming off the pass. A few hundred people elbow to elbow in a carpark on a warm night, plates in hand, working out what to queue for next. All of them there for one reason only: really good food, made by even better people.
It runs late. It gets loud. And yes, things do sell out. But the food is the entire point, so come hungry, come early, and don’t plan anything for afterwards.

‘Whole Beast’ beef patty, American cheddar, ‘BIG Happy’ sauce, lettuce, diced onion, sweet & spicy pickles on a sesame seed bun.
The RIBwich ($25)
Braised, pulled & compressed pork shoulder & jowl, smoky Tennessee BBQ sauce, sweet & spicy pickles and baby cipollini onions on a toasted soft white roll.
